Swedish Music and Folklore: Enchanting Tales of Nyckelharpa & Näcken

Experience Swedish folklore, magic, and traditional music with Renee Vaughan, a performer and teaching artist who brings Sweden’s folk traditions to life.

Learn about the Nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish string instrument played with a bow and keys, and Näcken, a shapeshifting spirit with the power to enchant musicians and their instruments.

Hear the tales and tunes from many Swedish folk classics that have been passed down for generations. Participants will also explore a historical “magic chart” created by a Swedish musician in the 1800’s that linked musical keys to colors, seasons, and emotions.

All ages welcome. No registration required.

This program is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
